Solar facades: The beautiful source of solar energy in a sustainable city

The sustainable office building <a href="https://pharoswork.com/building-by-pharos/">Pharos</a>, designed by Architectenbureau Cube architecten, next to Hoofddorp CS station has recently been completed. With an energy-generating, smart, and aesthetically pleasing solar panel facade by Studio Solarix, Pharos demonstrates that the facade of the future has now been realized! Aiming for further reduction of CO2 emissions.Pharos, an office building from 2003, was targeted for transformation into the healthiest working community in Europe, emphasizing circularity and energy supply. It&#039;s set to embody the circular economy. Cairn Real Estate renovated and redeveloped the existing structure, while interior architect Sheryl Leysner and her team designed the interior spaces. Studio Solarix was involved in the redevelopment as both advisor and designer, collaborating with partners Sorba, Kuijpers, Techdynamics, and Kameleon on the realization of 247m2 of solar panel facades at<a href="/en/projects/pharos-hoofddorp"> Pharos</a>. Through this collaboration, we take another significant step towards our ambition to achieve 140km2 of Solar Design panels by 2040, offsetting 7.2 billion CO2 annually.

How did we approach Pharos? It was clear early on that we wanted to create the facade of the future for <a href="/en/projects/pharos-hoofddorp">Pharos</a> by implementing a smart, sustainable solar panel facade in the new section that generates energy. Additionally, with the Solarix facade, we aimed to make a beautiful architectural statement to significantly enhance the building&#039;s appearance.Our Solar Design facade draws inspiration from the existing facade panels but incorporates solar cells using a special printing technique that adds depth, color, and vibrancy. Working closely with the facade builder and architect, we optimally integrated the Solarix solar panels into the building. We&#039;re incredibly proud to have partnered with Cairn to bring this Solar Design facade to fruition.

Special LED facade at Pharos The LED addition aimed to give the building something extra—to enable it to communicate with its surroundings. The building previously had a harsh appearance that we sought to soften using the LEDs. It&#039;s about making the building &#039;breathe,&#039; welcoming you as you arrive. These LEDs react to incoming trains and movement around the building.

What makes Solarix so smart and beneficial for commercial buildings? Solar Design facade panels are highly suitable for application in projects starting from a facade surface of 100m2. In the case of commercial buildings, there&#039;s often more facade surface available compared to roof surface. Solar facade panels are, therefore, a more interesting alternative to install than solar panels on the roof.Moreover, it keeps the roof surface available, allowing space for things like rooftop gardens. Solarix Solar Design panels can thus make a significant contribution to companies by both sustainability and enhancing the building&#039;s aesthetics. The panels also contribute to meeting BENG requirements in terms of sustainability.Studio Solarix develops beautiful new facade systems that generate energy and ultimately bring financial benefits. <a href="/en/projects/pharos-hoofddorp">Pharos</a> is the ultimate example of this!

Studio Solarix, together with VenhoevenCS and DS Landschapsarchitecten, developed a surprising proposal for the Design Challenge &#039;Our Energy, Our Landscape!&#039; Take a look at &#039;The Butterfly Effect,&#039; where generating clean energy in an innovative and beautiful way takes center stage. Additionally, it combines restoring connections in nature and minimizing noise pollution.The Design Challenge, organized by <a href="https://www.kunstlocbrabant.nl/projecten/design-challenge-onze-energie-ons-landschap-10872">Kunstloc Brabant</a>, <a href="https://www.staatsbosbeheer.nl">Staatsbosbeheer</a>, and <a href="https://www.hetgroenewoud.com">Het Groene Woud</a>, aligns with the increasing role of sustainability in Western society. Studio Solarix designed &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; with the multidisciplinary team of <a href="https://venhoevencs.nl">VenHoevenCS</a> and <a href="https://www.dsla.nl/">DS Landschapsarchitecten</a>.The design is essentially an ultralight web over the highway, not only intended for the challenge location at the A67 near the Strabrechtse heath but also applicable globally to infrastructure. The design enhances local ecosystems on a small scale while impacting a large-scale approach to climate change and biodiversity loss. Essentially, this principle can be applied to any road network.Starting with the &#039;little creatures&#039; Together with VenhoevenCS and DS Landschapsarchitecten, we pooled our collective expertise, passion, and creativity to establish a sustainable and achievable future. Including nature inclusivity is crucial in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss because &#039;every little creature counts.&#039;Small creatures like insects are vital in nature. Did you know that 85% of our food depends on their pollination? A span across the highway at treetop level aids in providing a safe crossing for these small creatures. This design restores crucial connections in nature.

&#039;Two Birds with One Stone&#039;What excites us even more is that the structure over the road offers a vast surface area for generating clean energy, aligning perfectly with Studio Solarix&#039;s sustainability vision. The lightweight &#039;web&#039; with its honeycomb structure can be filled with materials that harness solar energy. It&#039;s also designed to be modular, allowing growth and evolution alongside technological innovations. By utilizing the space above the road in this way, it also prevents unnecessary loss of landscape.No solar panel fields that cause biodiversity loss, but rather a &#039;web over the road&#039; that contributes to natural connections and clean energy generation.&quot;Participating in this design challenge and the creative collaboration has made the importance of preserving biodiversity clearer to me. While our company was primarily focused on sustainability, aesthetics, and circularity, biodiversity has now become an essential aspect.&quot; – Reinier Bosch – Studio SolarixNatural Sound BarrierTo maintain the focus on natural connections in the design, a simple yet effective sound barrier has been implemented. The designed structure not only generates solar energy but also allows nitrogen and particulate matter to settle into the soil. This enriches the ground alongside the road, facilitating tree growth. A significant stretch of forest significantly reduces the noise in the adjacent natural area. In other words, a natural solution as a sound barrier.Enchanting Like a ButterflyAt Studio Solarix, we prioritize ensuring that our sustainability solutions not only offer energy benefits but also look aesthetically pleasing. We found this aspect crucial in &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; proposal.The beautiful shadow patterns and variations in colors and materials create a captivating experience while driving. Just as one can be mesmerized by the colors and patterns of a butterfly, this design is functional and boasts an attractive aesthetic. The &#039;web&#039; could become a symbol of how we should treat nature, maintaining connections rather than losing them.

All in all, &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; provides an original and contemporary response to the central question of the design challenge: &#039;How can we create a sound-absorbing design that links energy generation with the surrounding nature and also stimulates imagination?&#039; Clean energy is generated through the spanning structure, the forest strip acts as a natural sound barrier, and the entire design captivates the imagination with its color variations and shadow dances. Studio Solarix&#039;s colorful Solar Design panels as a solar route along the A37? Recently, we showcased a trial installation of our Dot solar panels in Emmen, illustrating the possibilities and gaining coverage on RTV Drenthe and Dagblad van het Noorden!<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/rijkswaterstaat/">Rijkswaterstaat</a> is exploring the use of the A37 roadside areas for solar energy generation. This unique project involves collaboration with surrounding municipalities, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/provincie-drenthe/">the Province of Drenthe</a>, and grid operators <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/enexis-b-v-/">Enexis Groep</a> and<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/rendo-groep/"> RENDO-Groep.</a> The selection process is coming up soon, and we&#039;re keeping our fingers crossed!The solar route According to Okke van Brandwijk from Rijkswaterstaat, The Drentse Zonneroute A37 aims to install solar panels along the roadsides, ramps, and various junctions. This &quot;solar route&quot; covering 300 hectares with solar panels could alleviate power grid issues in Southeast Drenthe: generating 200 megawatts for around 50,000 households (RTV Drenthe). This initiative could significantly contribute to the Netherlands&#039; climate goals, and we&#039;d love to be part of it!A promising trial There are numerous possibilities with solar panels, but Studio Solarix knows how to blend beautiful design with energy generation. We had the opportunity to set up a trial installation in the parking lot next to the town hall in Emmen, allowing locals and interested parties to see what our potential &quot;solar route&quot; might look like.Crucial is the integration of solar panels into the landscape, rendering them almost &quot;invisible.&quot; With the Dot and Line collections, inspired by nature, we can achieve this seamlessly.
