Pharos with solar panel facade wins SHARE award

The multi-company building Pharos in Hoofddorp won the municipal sustainability prize SHARE Award 2021 at the beginning of October. Studio Solarix is proud that they have been able to contribute to the Pharos collective with the realization of a unique design solar panel facade.

Alderman Marja Ruigrok presented the tenth SHARE Award on 6 October during SHARE Meets Food on the De Olmenhorst estate. According to the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer, the building is “a great calling card”, according to the jury report.

“Pharos perseveres in shaping their vision, shows guts and sets an example for others. Even in this time with the consequences of a pandemic, Pharos continues to believe in what it stands for. In Pharos, all facets of sustainable innovation come together to make this business and meeting location the ‘healthiest working community in Europe’” (HCnieuws.nl).

The SHARE Award recognizes the sustainable and innovative approach of Pharos Hoofddorp, which has been realized with a collective of more than 20 innovations. Cairn Real Estate renovated and redeveloped the existing building in collaboration with Architectenbureau Cube architecten and interior architect Sheryl Leysner.

Studio Solarix acted in the Pharos collective as both an advisor and the designer of the solar panel facade. In collaboration with partners Sorba, Kuijpers, Techdynamics and Kameleon Solar, we realized 247m2 solar panels facades on Pharos. This design solar panel facade provides a compensation of 7.2 billion CO2 per year.

Inspired by nature: the new Line solar facade panels collection

How do you ensure that solar facade panels are aesthetically pleasing and ensure efficient energy yield? By using special printing techniques and nature as a starting point, the latest expansion ofSolarix Colours was created: de Line Collection. Designer Eefiene Bolhuis takes you through the development of the new solar panels.

“For this collection, we wanted to give a more material feel to our designs, reflecting the ‘imperfection’ of nature that inspired us,” says Eefiene. By looking at veins on leaves, she began to texture the panels with hand-drawn lines and colours. Precisely by preserving imperfections in the drawn lines, a natural pattern is created that makes the facade look natural when you walk past it.

“We looked at the grain structures of leaves and lines in wood that repeat themselves, giving depth and shape to the surface. These lines are never straight and all unique and different.”

Coloring outside the lines
At Studio Solarix we are always looking for innovative and endless possibilities. Our solar panels are therefore designed in such a way that they have unique patterns, so that you can continue to vary the facade of the built environment. The beauty of the Line collection Line collection lies in the way in which the lines are applied and combined with the color on the solar panels. Eefiene explains: “the lines provide color nuances up close and suggest smooth movements from afar”.

These smooth movements are created by using a hard pen line on one panel and a softer brush stroke on another. In addition, by combining the multiple lines horizontally, vertically, diagonally or even over each other, even more dimension can be created.

Away from boring black solar panels
Because solar facade panels are played with in the Studio Solarix with the lines and transparency, they are anything but boring. The use of the latest printing techniques with inspiration from nature makes the solar panels come to life.

“The skin of a building should feel friendly and pleasant to stay in, look good to walk by and have certain natural imperfections.”

In addition, Eefiene emphasizes that the ‘black’ of solar panels is not avoided, but is cleverly integrated into the pattern so that the energy yields are increased. The Line collectioncan therefore contribute to energy-neutral buildings that generate more energy than they consume and that look beautiful.

Stap dichter bij onze circulaire ambitie

The latest collection from Solarix Colors is part of Studio Solarix’s mission to enable the energy transition. “With our sustainable facade applications, we can achieve more than 25% CO2 reduction in the built environment over the next 25 years,” says Eefiene. On to more solar facade panels so that we can reduce the CO2 emissions of the built environment!

‘The Butterfly Effect’ – an ultra-light web over the highway

In the context of the Design Challenge ‘Our Energy Our Landscape’, Studio Solarix, together with VenhoevenCS and DS Landscape Architects, developed a surprising proposal! Watch ‘The Butterfly Effect’ in which generating clean energy in an inventive and beautiful way is central. In addition, it is combined with restoring connections in nature and limiting noise pollution.

The Design Challenge is organized by Kunstloc Brabant, Staatsbosbeheer and Het Groene Woud and responds to the fact that sustainability plays an increasingly important role in our Western society. Studio Solarix therefore designed “The Butterfly Effect” together with the multidisciplinary team of VenHoevenCS and DS Landschapsarchitecten.

The design is in fact an ultra-light web over the highway, but was not only designed for the challenge location on the A67 near the Strabrechtse heide; it can also be applied worldwide to infrastructure. The design strengthens local ecosystems on a small scale and also has an impact on a large-scale approach to climate change and biodiversity loss. In fact, this principle can be used with any road network.

The ‘little animals’ as a starting point

Small creatures such as insects are essential in nature. Did you know that 85% of our food depends on their pollination? A span over the highway at the height of the treetops helps in a safe crossing for these little critters. In this way we restore important connections in nature in our design.

‘A highway forms an enormous barrier in insect biotopes, the insects do not survive the vortices. Butterflies and other small creatures, for example, only dare to cross the highway when there is a traffic jam.’ – Maike van Stiphout – DS landschapsarchitecten

‘Two birds with one stone’
What makes our hearts beat even faster is the fact that the span over the road is an enormous surface from which clean energy can be generated, exactly in line with the sustainability vision of Studio Solarix. The lightweight honeycomb web can be filled with materials that generate solar energy. It is also modularly designed so that it can grow and evolve with technical innovations. By making double use of the space above the road, less landscape is also lost.

No solar panel fields that cause biodiversity loss, but a ‘web over the road’ that contributes to natural connections and the generation of clean energy.

“By participating in this design challenge and the creative collaboration, the importance of preserving biodiversity has become clearer to me. Where we as a company were mainly concerned with sustainability, aesthetics and circularity, biodiversity has now been added.” – Reinier Bosch – Studio Solarix

Natural Sound Barrier
In order to ensure that the natural connection remains central to the design, a simple but effective soundproofing has also been chosen. The designed span not only provides solar energy, but also that nitrogen and particulate matter end up in the soil. This enriches the soil along the road and allows trees to grow. Such a large strip of forest reduces the noise in the nature reserve behind it. In other words, a natural solution as a sound barrier.

Enchanting like a butterfly
At Studio Solarix we find it important that our sustainability solutions not only provide energy yields, but also look aesthetically pleasing. We therefore found this very important in the proposal of ‘The Butterfly Effect’.

The beautiful shadow patterns and variations in colors and materials therefore provide a special experience while driving. Just as you can be enchanted by the colors and patterns of a butterfly, this design is functional and has a beautiful design. The ‘web’ can become the epitome of how we should interact with nature and maintain connections instead of losing them.

‘This design provides an aesthetic experience that refers to insect wings, spiders and butterflies’ – Angèle Reinders – Professor of Design of Sustainable Energy Systems

All in all, ‘The Butterfly Effect’ provides an original and contemporary answer to the central question of the design challenge: “How can we make a soundproof design, in which energy generation is linked to the surrounding nature and also appeals to the imagination? Clean energy is generated with the span, the forest strip acts as a natural sound barrier and the entire design appeals to the imagination with the color variations and shadow dances. Just like the butterfly.

Our colorful Solar Design solar panels as a solar route

Solar Design as a solar route along the A37? We recently showed how it can be done in Emmen with a test setup of our Dot solar panels and we were featured on RTV Drenthe and Dagblad van het Noorden!

Rijkswaterstaat Rijkswaterstaat is exploring how the verges along the A37 can be used to generate solar energy. A unique project in which the development takes place together with surrounding municipalities, the Province of DrentheProvincie Drenthe and network operators Enexis Groep and RENDO-Groep. The selection procedure for this will take place shortly, for which we are of course keeping our fingers crossed!

The solar route
According to Okke van Brandwijk of Rijkswaterstaat De Drentse Zonneroute A37, the intention is to install solar panels along the roadsides, slip roads and various junctions. The so-called solar route with 300 hectares of solar panels would solve the electricity network problems in Southeast Drenthe: 200 megawatts of electricity for about 50,000 households (RTV Drenthe). As a result, the solar route will also be able to make an important contribution to the climate objectives of the Netherlands. Of course we would be happy to contribute to this!

A nice test set-up
There are many possibilities with solar panels, but Studio Solarix knows better than anyone how to combine a beautiful design and energy yields. We were therefore allowed to build a test set-up in the parking lot next to the town hall in Emmen so that local residents and other interested parties could take a look at what our ‘solar route’ could become.

It is of course important that the solar panels are integrated into the landscape, making them a kind of ‘invisible’. We can achieve this well with the Dot and Line collection, in which inspiration is drawn from nature. The wide variety of color options from the collection can contribute to a natural progression with the landscape against which they will lie.

Watch the video from RTV Drenthe here.

Rijkswaterstaat wants to have the zoning plan ready before the summer in collaboration with municipalities and the province. We hope that our Solar Design panels on the A37 can shine!

What do you get out of bed for in the morning?

In April 2020 I got out of bed for the first time for Studio Solarix! I started working as a Business Developer, but first wanted to know the ins and outs of the team. Why do we do what we do? So I first interviewed the entire team looking for the answers.

Of course everyone has their own individual story, but I soon found out that there was a common thread in the team. Regardless of the perspective as an architect, designer, product designer, artist or entrepreneur, they shared a vision and shared values.

More sustainable world
The Studio Solarix team makes a sustainable and beautiful world. Not just in words, but especially in deeds. On a global scale, on a national level, but also on an urban level: a beautiful sustainable city with sustainable neighborhoods and buildings. As cliché as it may sound, our young team consists largely of parents who “want a beautiful and sustainable world for our children.” Who would not want that?

Human energy
Everything we do, we do with energy. Not only in kilowatt hours, but especially in human energy. This energy with the right focus ensures growth within our scale-up. Just like sunlight ensures the growth of plants and flowers.

As a growing company, we therefore always look energetically for opportunities. Bears on the road are there to drive around or over. We will innovate ourselves. Let others talk, we just do it together with our customers and partners. Calculate the business case together with a developer or develop the right colors together with an Architect.

Candy store
Our leitmotiv as a company? Design. We have created a candy store of Solar Design solar panels for project developers and architects and want to expand that further. Sexy facade panels that generate energy and at the same time reduce CO2 emissions. Want to have it because it is beautiful and durable.

Studio Solarix 2050
We have a long-term vision, for ourselves but also with our clients. The buildings with Studio Solarix go from sketch design to realization with a view of 3 to sometimes 5 years. We therefore have a vision for 2050 in which we are the market leader in making the world’s buildings more beautiful and sustainable with our innovative Design Solar Facades. Energy-neutral living and energy generation in the facade are mainstream! We cannot do this alone and that is why we like to work with partners and relations who also have a long-term vision and where we find equal values.

The future will be brighter and more sustainable with local energy from the facade. And if after a few strategy sessions with the team you come to the conclusion that we are going to conquer the world together, you will get out of bed full of energy every day!!

Smart solar panels for the Pharos project

The sustainable business complexPharos, designed by Architectenbureau Cube architecten, next to Hoofddorp CS station has recently been completed. With energy-supplying, smart and beautiful solar panel facade from Studio Solarix, Pharos shows that the facade of the future has now been realized! On to an even greater reduction in CO2 emissions

Pharos is an office building from 2003. The goal was to transform the building into the healthiest working community in Europe in which circularity and energy supply are central. It will be the epitome of the circular economy. Cairn Real Estate renovated and redeveloped the existing building and interior architect Sheryl Leysner and her team designed the interior spaces. Studio Solarix is involved in the redevelopment both as a consultant and as a designer and we worked together with partners Sorba, Kuijpers, Techdynamics and Kameleon on the realization of 247m2 solar panel facades on Pharos. Thanks to this collaboration, we are another big step closer to our ambition to realize 140km2 of Solar Design panels by 2040. With this we provide compensation of 7.2 billion CO2 per year

How did we work at Pharos?
It soon became clear that we wanted to make the facade of the future for Pharos, by realizing a smart sustainable solar panel facade that generates energy in the new part. In addition, with the Solarix facade we were able to make a beautiful architectural gesture to give the building a much better appearance.

Our Solar Design facade is inspired by the existing facade panels, but then equipped with solar cells in combination with a special printing technique that gives depth, color and liveliness. Together with the facade builder and architect, the Solarix solar panels are optimally integrated into the building. We are very proud that we were able to realize this Solar Design facade together with Cairn.

Special LED facade from Pharos
The LED has been added to give the building something extra; to make it communicate with its environment. The building used to have a harsh appearance, we want to soften this with the LED By letting the building breathe, as it were, and welcoming you when you arrive. These LEDs respond to oncoming trains and movement near the building.

Read more about the whole project >>>

What makes Solarix so smart and good for commercial buildings?
Solar Design facade panels are extremely suitable for application on projects starting from a facade surface of 100m2. For commercial buildings, there is often more facade area available in relation to roof area. Solar Facade panels are therefore a more interesting alternative to install than solar panels on the roof.

In addition, it keeps the roof surface free, freeing up space for roof gardens, for example. Solarix Solar Design panels can therefore make a major contribution for companies to make the building more sustainable and specialize. The panels also contribute to meeting the NZEB sustainability requirements.

Studio Solarix develops beautiful new facade systems that supply energy and generate money in the long term. Pharos is the ultimate example of this!

Green mission, green fingers

It’s spring! Are your fingers starting to itch too? Ours is! March 24 was the kick-off of the Tropentuin in the Museum garden at the Tropeninstituut where we now grow our own vegetables and use the shared herb garden. So Studio Solarix not only has a green mission, but also green fingers!

At the initiative of The Healthy City, a neighborhood vegetable garden has been located behind the Tropenmuseum since 2018, with a self-picking herb garden, greenhouse, worm hotel and twenty vegetable garden containers. The Tropentuin is beautifully situated between KIT and the Oosterpark and is part of the Museum Garden, designed by DS Landscape Architects.

Various collaboration sessions and fun activities are organized at the Tropentuin, for example, the opening of the vegetable garden season took place on 24 March. In collaboration with Nancy Wiltink of Moestuin School Amsterdam, a starter package was available for a private Tropenbak, Rowin van Compostier explained the worm hotel and the herb picking garden is made possible by Abbing Buitenhof. A great collaboration between local residents, companies and sustainable initiatives of which Studio Solarix is happy to be a part.

The planting season has started, we have our own tropical container and are looking forward to the Solarix lunches this summer with our own vegetables. On to a bright green future!

Listening Tip: Reinier at Mayor’s Manual Podcast

What is the importance of energy transition? Our founder Reinier Bosch was a guest in Mayor’s Manual Podcast and spoke with Kenneth Keijns from the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute)and Sacha Stolp fromthe municipality of Amsterdamabout innovative solutions for the energy issues of today and tomorrow.

Examples of new ideas are discussed in every episode of Mayor’s Manual podcast. Ideas about value creation, ownership and use. Sacha Stolp got to know Studio Solarix during a presentation in New York and invited Reinier to the podcast. A unique opportunity that we would of course like to take up. In addition to Studio Solarix, Alliander’s initiator Pallas Agterberg was also a guest.

During the podcast, Renier spoke on behalf of Studio Solarix about the theme of change. Not only within an organization, but also outside it. How can you start a movement? What do you run into? Of course all with regard to the current energy transition and which ones are still to come in the future and of course our vision on this.

    News.

    Seen at Cobouw!

Studio Solarix founders Marloes van Heteren and Reinier Bosch were guests at Cobouw’s “Gamechangers on Tour”and‘Trends & Transitions, both events aboutinnovative frontrunners in construction. Curious about our contribution? Read on quick!

    Gamechangers on Tour
Studio Solarix talkedto editor-in-chief Eric Verweij and investigative journalist Thomas van Belzen about how Solar Design solar panels on facades make the world more beautiful and sustainable.

Currently, there are many bears on the road in construction. The lead time is long, exacting rules and not everyone is aware of applicable and effective innovations. Cobouw therefore launched the video series “Gamechangers” to create more attention for the innovation climate in the Netherlands. Marloes and Reinier took them along in Solarix’s voyage of discovery and how those bears can really be put off the road.

Solar panels in the pasture? Stick them against facades!
Currently, there is still a lot of investment in just solar panels on roofs or in meadows, but more than 250 square kilometers of facades are available in the Netherlands. Studio Solarix explained to Verweij and van Belzen that these are all potential energy sources. Why not take advantage of these?

Gamechangers emphasizes that there are many prejudices in construction. Studio Solarix shows that innovation is really possible and easy to realize. The innovative Pharos building in Hoofddorp, for example, is one of many examples. This old building has been decorated by Studio Solarix with colorful facades that generate energy efficiently and look beautiful. This brings us closer to our dream of effectively equipping as many facades as possible in the Netherlands with solar panels without making buildings “ugly”.

    Don’t limit, but inspire
Van Belzen put Studio Solarix to the test: whether traditional black solar panels have a higher efficiency? Fortunately, we can prove that the Solar Design panels are also efficient and can pay for themselves. The business model that is currently being developed is based on a payback model of 8 to 9 years.

A characteristic of Studio Solarix’s solar panels is that technology and design are brought together to create a beautiful product that generates as much energy as possible and looks beautiful. The solar panels are therefore not limiting, but inspiring! This inspiration often comes from nature and the solar panels are then optimized for energy generation and that they match well with other building materials.

    Dream and do
Studio Solarix’s dreams are not only about the wallet, but largely about the sustainable pursuit. That is why we are also working towards providing most of the facades in the Netherlands with our Solar Design facades within 5 years. In addition, we are working towards a future with circular solar panels that can be used everywhere. However, we don’t just dream, we do!

There are so many possibilities in Dutch construction and Studio Solarix, like Gamechangers, hopes to inform architects and project developers about innovations. For example, we know that we can also generate energy with beautiful design façade panels. What can Dutch construction do? The turnaround time could be faster … This is already being realized abroad. Who’s it now?

    The follow-up: Trends & Transitions
The episode of Gamechangers got a nice follow-up, on March 25th Marloes was allowed to join the online event about how we can make construction sustainable and future-proof faster. Together with CEO Onno Dwars of Ballast Nedam Development she sat at the table. The message? “Now we are just going to do it sustainably! And beautiful of course. ”

Get inspired and watch the video of this interesting conversation below:
