Solar facades: The beautiful source of solar energy in a sustainable city

Villa Lichtenberg is designed as a sustainable home that is low in energy and maintenance with a combination of unique qualities. The villa is located in a rolling green landscape with a double living floor downstairs, a bedroom floor above and a roof structure.Solarix was asked to work with <a href="https://wvwa.nl/">architect Willem van Winsen</a> and the clients to design the facade of the bedroom floor as an energy-generating facade. The appearance and distribution of the facade panels was important, without the association with standard solar panels. The result is a rhythmic pattern of various custom-made coloured design solar panels in the facades.

The facade consists of different sizes of solar panels, creating a varied image. The panels themselves have a mesh pattern of moss green and sand, which gives an almost traditional look. The energy-generating facade produces sufficient energy to meet the daily energy demand of the home, including the heat pump and the electric car.

Solarix was asked by the architect and client to help design the facade early in the project. Ultimately, Solarix was commissioned by the client to take care of the realization of the facade. Process

Want to make a building more sustainable in a beautiful way? That&#039;s possible! On behalf of the <a href="https://www.middelburg.nl/">Municipality of Middelburg</a>, Solarix has made the <a href="https://www.zeelandtheaters.nl/theaters/schouwburg-middelburg/">city theatre</a> in the historic city more sustainable. With this project, the municipality wants to show that it is also possible to generate sustainable energy in an architecturally valuable building in a historic environment.During the design process, Solarix took the existing architecture as a starting point. The colours in the brickwork and window frames and the function and appearance of the building were examined. The vertically placed panels therefore decorate both sides of the main entrance of the Theatre, like wings.

The special matte design of the Solarix Line collection has an appearance that matches the existing brickwork and refers to stage curtains. The design solar panel provides a dynamic facade and extra high-energy yield.

Want to make it more sustainable in a beautiful way? That's possible! On behalf of the municipality of Middelburg, Solarix is making the city theatre in the historic city more sustainable with solar panels on the facade.

In the context of the Design Challenge &#039;Our Energy Our Landscape&#039;, Solarix, together with <a href="https://venhoevencs.nl/">VenhoevenCS</a> and <a href="https://www.dsla.nl/">DS Landscape Architects</a>, developed a surprising proposal: &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039;, which focuses on generating clean energy in an inventive and beautiful way. In addition, it is combined with restoring connections in nature and limiting noise pollution.

The Design Challenge is organized by <a href="https://www.kunstlocbrabant.nl/kennis-inspiratie/design-challenge-onze-energie-ons-landschap-10872">Kunstloc Brabant</a>, <a href="https://www.staatsbosbeheer.nl/">Staatsbosbeheer</a> and <a href="https://www.hetgroenewoud.com/">Het Groene Woud</a> and responds to the fact that sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in our Western society. Solarix therefore designed &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; together with the multidisciplinary team of VenHoevenCS and DS Landscape architects.The design is in fact an ultra-light web over the highway, but is not only designed for the assignment location on the A67 near the Strabrechtse heath; it can also be applied to infrastructure worldwide. The design strengthens local ecosystems on a small scale and also has an impact on a large-scale approach to climate change and biodiversity loss. In fact, this principle can be applied to any road network.

Together with VenhoevenCS and DS Landschapsarchitecten, we have used our joint expertise, drive and creativity to create a sustainable and achievable sustainable future. It is very important to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss to include nature inclusivity, because &#039;every little thing counts&#039;.Small creatures like insects are essential in nature. Did you know that 85% of our food depends on their pollination? A span over the highway at the height of the treetops contributes to a safe crossing for these small creatures. In this way, we restore important connections in nature in our design.

The ‘little animals’ as a starting point

What makes our hearts beat even faster is the fact that the span over the road is an enormous surface from which clean energy can be generated, exactly in line with Solarix&#039;s sustainability vision. The lightweight honeycomb web can be filled with materials that generate solar energy. It is also designed to be modular, so it can grow and evolve with technical innovations. By making double use of the space above the road, less landscape is lost.No solar panel fields that cause biodiversity loss, but a &#039;web over the road&#039; that contributes to natural connections and the generation of clean energy.

To ensure that the natural connection remains central to the design, simple but effective sound insulation has also been chosen. The designed span not only ensures that solar energy is generated, but also ensures that nitrogen and particulate matter end up in the soil. This enriches the soil along the road and allows trees to grow. Such a large strip of forest reduces noise in the nature reserve behind it. In other words: a natural solution as a sound barrier.

At Solarix we find it important that our sustainability solutions not only provide energy yields, but also look aesthetically pleasing. We therefore found this very important in the proposal of ‘The Butterfly Effect’.The beautiful shadow patterns and variations in colors and materials therefore provide a special experience while driving. Just as you can be enchanted by the colors and patterns of a butterfly, this design is functional and has a beautiful design. The ‘web’ can become the epitome of how we should interact with nature and maintain connections instead of losing them.

All in all, &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; provides an original and contemporary answer to the central question of the design challenge: “How can we create a soundproof design, where energy generation is linked to the surrounding nature and also appeals to the imagination? The span generates clean energy, the forest strips act as a natural sound barrier, and the entire design appeals to the imagination with the colour variations and shadow dances. As part of the Design Challenge 'Our Energy Our Landscape', Solarix, together with VenhoevenCS and DS Landscape Architects, presented 'The Butterfly Effect', which focuses on generating clean energy above the highway in an inventive and beautiful way.

DSM is building a new, sustainable head office in Maastricht. DSM has fully anchored sustainability in the company and, in close collaboration with real estate developers <a href="https://edge.tech/">EDGE</a> and <a href="https://www.3wrealestate.nl/">3W real estate</a> , is creating a new, innovative and inspiring head office that is completely &#039;Paris-Proof&#039;. With the new head office, DSM wants to contribute positively to the development of the immediate environment.The building will have a completely contemporary appearance in which transparency, light and space are central.The generation of solar energy is one of the most important pillars for making the building energy neutral. Solar panels are used on both the roofs and the facades of the new construction as part of the total energy concept and to balance energy yields.

The architect&#039;s design consists of repetitive elements and beautiful robust materials, combined with a beautiful facade panel. This facade panel has become a Solarix solar panel. Together with the architects, we looked for a design and color that matched nicely with the other materials and also added something special to the facade. Through a mock-up of the facade and 2 different variants, a gray from the Dot collection in a medium enlarged print was ultimately chosen.

Solarix was involved by architects Broek and Bakema because they were charmed by the possibilities of the Solarix designs. In collaboration with BAM as builder and the architect, Solarix then went through an engineering process to arrive at the correct color, dimensions and detailing. BAM subsequently became the client and LDS Energy is responsible for the installation and assembly.
